Learn the secrets of Yūgen's matcha
Taste the Yūgen difference
Discover Yūgen's matcha using our 3 step tasting method
At Yūgen Matcha, we approach our tea with care and precision to ensure every detail of its character is understood and shared authentically, by focusing on five essential qualities: sweetness, umami, thickness, acidity, and vegetal notes.
We capture the true balance and harmony of the Yabukita cultivar. Each aspect is evaluated with intention: the gentle natural sweetness, the deep umami richness, the smooth and rounded body, the clean, low acidity, and the light vegetal freshness that adds subtle depth without overpowering. Guided by this philosophy, we follow a clear three-step process to deliver the most accurate and comprehensive assessment of Yūgen's matcha.
Step 1: Prep for consistency
Use water at 80°C. Sift 2g into a pre-warmed bowl for Usucha (add 70-80ml water); for Koicha, use 3-4 g with 30-40ml water at 75°C. Pre-soak the Chasen, then whisk (W-motion) until fine microfoam forms with no clumps.
Step 2: Visual and aroma check
Evaluate dry powder (vivid, uniform green; fine texture). After whisking, check crema stability and surface uniformity. Inhale aroma immediately: note fresh green, nutty/umami, floral, or sea-breeze nuances.
Step 3: Structured tasting (two sips)
First sip: sweetness, umami, acidity (clean vs sharp).
Second sip: thickness (body/mouthfeel) and vegetal (fresh-green character).

Experience the best of Japanese tea with Yūgen matcha
PRODUCT OF JAPAN
Our tea is a rare single-origin matcha sourced from the lush tea
fields of Shizuoka in Japan, renowned for their exceptional quality.
PUREST BLEND
We offer a single-origin blend.
Each leaf carefully handpicked by our farmers in the first harvest of the year in May, to preserve its freshness, authentic flavours and captivating aroma.
TRADITIONALLY FARMED
Our ceremonial organic tea is shade-grown, carefully handpicked by farmers and traditionally stone-ground to deliver the most authentic Japanese matcha experience.

Organic Matters
Organic matters especially for matcha because unlike regular tea, you’re not steeping the leaves and discarding them: you’re consuming the entire powdered leaf.
That means any pesticides, synthetic fertilisers or contaminants present on the tea plant end up directly in your body. The organic certification on Yūgen Matcha (JAS, EU-BIO, USDA and Canada-Bio) ensures the matcha is cleaner, safer, while also protecting the soil. You’re drinking matcha that’s as pure and natural as possible.
At Yūgen, we work closely with dedicated farmers in Shizuoka, Japan, who hand pick the first flush harvest and use traditional farming methods to protect the soil and the tea plants.
We’re proud to bring you a matcha that supports both your wellness goals and a healthier earth, pure, clean, and crafted with care from farm to cup.

Sourced in Shizuoka, Japan
Yūgen Matcha is proudly sourced from Shizuoka, a region renowned for its lush mountain sides, pure river waters, and centuries of Japanese tea expertise. Shizuoka offers a unique terroir, rich volcanic soil, coastal breezes, and misty valleys that produces matcha with a bright green colour, smooth umami, and refreshing vegetal notes.
Shizuoka has been a leader in Japanese tea cultivation for over 800 years, and today it’s home to some of the most sustainable and innovative farms in the country.
How to make Matcha

Cultivar and tea plant variety
Our matcha is crafted from the Yabukita cultivar of the Camellia sinensis plant, Japan’s most celebrated tea variety. Grown in Shizuoka and shaded before harvest, Yabukita is cherished for its smooth umami, natural sweetness, and vibrant green colour.
